I love language. What's a random linguistics thing you've been chewing on?
rAAAGHHH A CHANCE TO BABBLE ABOUT MY INTERESTS?!?!?!? ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡I’LL TAKE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!
OK SO I’ve admittedly been thinking a lot about the universal translator from star trek lately because i started re-watching the st series deep space 9. i am fully aware that there's a lot of holes in the way the whole thing works since the concept is pretty much a plot device to have the story flow nicely but i like thinking about its implications just for fun!
so. the UT translates every single language, even from new encountered cultures/species(!), and it works by (((as far as i remember)) analyzing the new language and comparing it to a massive database of other languages in order to deduce the new language's grammar.
one of the things i think about for entertainment is: if i for any reason i was the first encounter with “The Aliens” and they had a universal translator like the one from star trek… how would That go?
Like, for example, if i used the formal form of spanish when i'm talking to them (because i am Polite), would the universal translator assume that Spanish only has that form? Or is there a way for machine translation to infer the existence of an informal form even if I only refer to the aliens in formal spanish?? ((in other words, is there something embedded in the way spanish is constructed that would hint towards the existence of an informal form? and could a super clever machine like the UT pick up on it))). Furthermore, if their alien language makes no distinction between formal and informal, does it even matter at all that i am trying to be polite with them??? (((i mean, it would matter to me in my heart but like objectively speaking,,,,,,, probably not??🤨 but even if i know it's not gonna carry out into their language i would still use the formal form and try to be polite.....)))
also, in-universe i’ve always wondered why some characters are able to switch from English to their own language. shouldn’t all their speech be translated, if the UT is constantly running?? the only answer i can think of right now is that the universal translator somehow reads their mind (?) or is somehow aware of the speaker's intention/desire and can sense when a speaker wants to switch back to their language. Which would make sense. and i think that is part of the canon explanation for how it works –some technobabble about brain waves that i can't remember right now–, but if that is the case then it only poses more questions to me. like, for example, if someone makes a joke that would be hard for outsiders of their culture to understand then:
1) would the u.t. be able to tell this?  because maybe yes maybe the UT can deduce grammar and syntax but there's so much more of Us in the way we use language!!1! can it deduce culture or slang or idioms?? a lot of the language we use is so nuanced, which is precisely one of the limitations of machine translation.
but lets say the technology is so advanced that it can tell when things are jokes and when said jokes will be hard to understand for outsiders, then: 2) would it make use of equivalence OR would it opt for something like literal translation?  domesticating stuff (or finding an equivalence) could make communication “easier” or "more comfortable" for the receiver but aren’t these people in space precisely there to learn about new things and cultures? When you domesticate a text, part of its original meaning gets lost... wouldn't scientist or historians or whatever be apprehensive about losing that information about other cultures? Someties when i consume things that have been translated into my language, i wonder about all the inside stuff like that that i might be missing lol
SDJDSKDSFHDSJKHDSK ¿¿¿¿in sum ???? i have many thoughts and questions regarding the Star Trek Universal Translator** and literally no concrete answers. i just run around thinking about it. i think most of the answers depend on the situation i guess. (**many of which can be applied to translation itself)
this ended up not really being Linguistic Facts and just me voicing my brainrot. im sorry. i tend to go feral over anything that is about translation and/or language teaching bc that’s what i'm majoring in and the universal translator has always been such an engrossing concept to me. PLUS i had never actually shared any of my thoughts on this outwardly and i had a lot of fun rambling ((( you might be able to tell by the long ass wall of text i replied with. WHICH. AGAIN. IM SORRY))))

Do you buy stuff online? Do you think Magnus shops stuff online just because it's fun clicking it even though he can just create it/ summon it? Do you think he shows it to Alec and Alec is like (?) you can get it on your own (?) what's the point (?) but gets excited anyways just because
i buy stuff online about as much as i buy stuff regularly, which is..... not a lot djdndjdnd i hate shopping in general (esp for clothes) and most of my clothes and things are either hand-me-downs or gifts, so i end up buying clothes around once a year, once every two years, or so. but when i do buy them, i like online better cuz it saves me from terrible, dreaded social interactions and sensorial hell that will haunt me for days.
anyway! about Magnus. i do think he likes shopping, cuz while yeah, sure, he can just conjure up clothes, it uses up his magic and creativity and work as a whole shopping is easier. plus, with shopping he can get things he wouldnt find on his own, inspiration, etc. also, it's fun on its own (for him anyway)
i like to think that Magnus enjoys shopping at locally owned places because 1- he can get more unique clothes that are made with more than just the industry in mind, and that usually arent literally made to rip within the first year, 2- he gets to meet and help out struggling and talented ppl who are trying to keep their businesses afloat, and 3- because it means he can help these ppl's cultures survive and exist on their terms for a bit longer, and thats important to him. cuz hes a softie like that
so he shops in markets and small shops mostly, all around the world. no matter what country you're in, he knows a small shop hidden in a corner somewhere that's just a treasure. and he can get whatever he wants because he can adjust them magically, so that's pretty nice :) he knows all the owners and is friends with them, too
as for online shopping! lately there have been more and more exclusively-online small shops popping up (at least in Brazil) which follow that same pattern of small, locally owned, handmade, etc. so i think hed be into that! also, i think he finds clicking and browsing through..... soothing, and it saves him some of the work of portalling, travelling around, talking to ppl, etc, when hes tired and just wants a distraction. he can get a bit lost in it imo, like he'll blink and hours have passed and he's gone through the whole catalogue lmaoo. and again measures arent a problem cuz he can just adjust them anyway
Alec thinks it's kinda cute and he can get into it because he does Not enjoy shopping, he feels smothered and exposed at the same time, and theres too many people and weird social interactions and he just does not care that much haha me projecting? never but he does like to look nice even if obviously hes not exactly a groundbreaking fashionmaker. so Magnus saved his life cuz it saved him the trouble lmao and he can get like, some nice black suits and shirts without going through all the hassle (ugh thats the dream tbh)
but anyway he likes that Magnus likes it and this way he can share this little bit of Magnus too without tiring himself out. and Magnus will sometimes show him something and ask Alec for his opinions- which are never helpful, but he asks anyway and Alec tries and they both love the other for it. so yeah. it's nice

I was tagged by @vildeliens thank you Queen (of clowns and headcanoons) ❤️
Pick 5 shows, then answer the following questions, don’t cheat. Tag 10 (or however many) people.
Oz
Skam France
The Walking Dead
Doctor Who
Torchwood
1. Who is your favourite character in 2? Well that one is easy as hell. Lucas Lallemant, without the shadow of a doubt. I just adore that boy... I really do believe that he’s the most developed character of the whole skam universe. Also, i relate to him so so much, being parisian and 17 and queer and just, globally similar. And that Acting (TM) sure helps (will i ever be over axel’s acting? I dont think so)... I am gonna stop before i write essays (you all think this is a joke but i actually write random stuff about Lucas when i get bored in class, thats how bad it is). I just really love this boy folks...
2. Who is your least favourite character in 1? Well that’s an easy one too. Vernon Schillinger, because he is a neonazi, which is enough. And he is just plain BAD (rapist, murderer, coward, blackmailer... you name it)... And it’s not even a love hate situation, i despise the guy so  much, he makes me wanna crawl off my skin whenever he is on screen. Also i think he’s quite one dimensional which is very weird for that show but yeah. He is The Bad Guy.
3. What is your favourite episode of 4? Well that’s a harder one lmao, because you know, the show has been going on since 1963, which means i have many many favourites... Imma go only with reboot, cause thats the one i know better and i have to say it’s the one i enjoy the most. I think my all time fave is the two parts one, The Empty Child and The Doctor Dances, because those are just so perfect in every aspect imo. But i also love love love the library arc from season 4 (i think lmao) because KUDOS FOR MAKING US INSENSITIVE ABOUT A CHARACTER’S DEATH ONLY FOT IT TO KILL US LATER (and overall the episodes are so so good). Also, because i’m a hoe for big dramatic moments, the episodes with the Master (end of s3 and end of s4 mainly, i dont really like Missy) and the two parts The Stolen Earth/Journey’s end (i remember being so hyped by all of them squading up). Also, it’s not an episode but it deserves its place there: the entire season 6. Because Matt Smith, Karen Gillan, Alex Kingston and Arthur Darvill are just so good. I didnt really enjoy seasons 8 to 10 (even tho i adore Peter Capaldi), but season 7 also has some that i loved (Angels in Manhattan and The Name of the Doctor killed me). And the 50th anniversary. I MEAN THIS IS COMPLICATE I LOVE THIS SHOW SO MUCH IT HAS SO MANY GOOD EPISODES (and it’s the first show i got obsessed with so theres that)
4. What is your favourite season of 5? I think i’ll go with season 2 (?), because i love the og squad and they were all in it in s2, and i think the arcs were done really well (and the last episode, haha, me dead)... S3 and 4 i enjoyed less cause i think the teams didn’t really work without Tosh, Owen and Ianto... I couldn’t really find that magic again (and yes i’m still bitter).
5. Who is your favourite couple in 3? It’s hard to find ALIVE people to form couples with lmao so i’ll go with one that is in kinda stand-by... it’s complicate...  Rick and Michonne cause i loved how they were best friends first and how their whole story was built... It made a lot of sense to me. Also i love the show less nowadays but i think those are still strong characters (minus Rick now lol)
6. Who is your favourite couple in 2? I had to snort. I know, it’s going to surprise you all, but it’s Manon and Charles OF COURSE. Kidding (pls. break. them. up). It’s Eliott and Lucas (how many of you all are surprised) because. Do i need to explain. Just. Everything. I can’t even put it into words. they’re just a perfect match and so in tune and so in love and i should stop now but i won’t so i’m sorry. I love how they complete each other and understand each other, and i loved how Lucas made Eliott’s dream real (polaris), and i love how they arent perfect yet they learn with each other and they make each other better . I love how cute they look and how in love and how raw. I love the way Lucas’ voice softens when he talks to eliott, and the way eliott’s eyes are so full of wonder. Also the way they fight sometimes but always come back to each other and love stronger. And their ship names literally means “chosen one”, how could I not ship? LISTEN THEY JUST FIT OKAY AND I WONT TAKE ANY CRITICISM
7. What is your favourite episode of 1? oh god i don’t remember them all at all lmao but imma try to come up with one (not 22838 like i normally do). So i’d say 4x11 (revenge is sweet)?? but honestly the show is so continuous that its hard to choose one ep... id say s4 is my favourite hands down though
8. What is your favourite episode of 5? YES THAT I CAN!! it’s from season 1, even though i love s2 better overall, Countrycide. I loved everything about that ep, and it still sends shivers down my spine when i think about it. I particularly enjoyed how it depicted the team’s relationships and how it showed that monsters can be amongst mankind (which, we been knew, but still. it was very well done for a show that fights aliens to fight humans)
9. What is your favourite season of 2? Another easy one! Season 3, as my entire blog can attest. It’s just. A masterpiece. That’s it that’s the post.
10. How long have you watched 1? I bingewatched it in like two months (cause i had to take breaks because school) in 2016. It’s a show that ended around 2000 so it’s not like i HAD to wait, and the episodes aren’t really stand alone so i had to watch them in a row.
11. How did you become interested in 3? I started watching with my dad because he is a cinephile that shows me loads of movies and tv series, then showed it to my mom. And now my dad stopped watching so i watch it with my mom exclusively even though i dont enjoy as much as i used to (still love it though).
12. Who is your favourite actor in 4? Matt Smith (even though i adored Eccleston, and couldn’t appreciate Tennant’s AMAZINGNESS cause i was too sad to see 9 go aoimjdk). But Matt Smith is the funniest, most Doctor-ish one imo.
13. Which do you prefer, 1, 2, or 5? This is gonna sound like a betrayal to shows i’ve watched for so many years but Skam France, hands down. (i’m obsessed okay)
14. Which show have you seen more episodes of, 1 or 3? 3 because it has more eps and i’m caught up with both, so logically its 3.
15. If you could be anyone from 4, who would you be? Umh i think i’m kinda similar to Clara in some ways (?). Maybe. Like in the way we’re both hopeless romantic in search of an adventurous life. Plus, she is a lgbt+ icon and you can’t convince me otherwise so there’s that. i mean i think i globally identify with companions cause i wanna be them so bad lmao (imagine how cool it would be for my nerdy self ugh). But i look like a Sontaran so. Mayhaps i’d be one of those instead
16. Would a crossover between 3 and 4 work? umh that’d be funny as hell. The Doctor just jumping in a zombie apocalypse. Though i think they’d find a way to stop the apocalypse, so the second show would be annihilated by the first one. Mmh. Interesting still, up for it (i’m up for anything tbh)
17. Pair two characters in 1 who would make an unlikely but strangely okay couple? That’s the hardest one i had to answer GOD. I’d go with the crack ship, Ryan O’Reilly and Miguel Alvarez, tho they would both kill me and then burn my body if they ever saw this
18. Overall, which show has the better storyline, 3 or 5? Weeeelll i think The Walking Dead used to have an amazing storyline (the Governor’s arc was spectacular), but now i’d go with Torchwood cause sometimes (a lot of times), shows that don’t try to make it last for ages tie everything better. And Torchwood did tie things well enough imo (even tho i’m forever sad and bitter)
19. Which has the better theme music, 2 or 4? I don’ think Skam France has a theme music?? more like soundtracks (amazing ones)??? But i mean even if it did Doctor Who would still win cause the themes are fantastic (yes i went there)
This was so fun guys so imma tag @evnisak, @isak-valterssen, @jebentnietalleen, @demauryy, @srodvlv, @takaoparadise, @starcassstic, @thebananaslug, @sleepingthroughmyproblems, @akalousthings and anyone else i forgot, or anyone wanting to do this really

Special FEature: “GOO”gle!!
Hello! Mod carolella here. today i decided to goto google, the foremost Image Aggregator online, to look at pictures of goodra. this allows me to get a “general idea” of what the wider populace believes about goodra, how they see her, et cetera. the results were very interesting, and conclusive! let’s start out.
Tumblr media
here is the first screen-capture. pretty standard stuff!! unfortunately google did not include a gender category in the overview of goodra’s stats. im not sure why this is. probably they decided it was not necessary, and assumed (rightly) that most normal people who are not fascists or sex perverts (the two groups that demographically support “male goodra” most vehemently) would immediately understand that goodra is an all-female species, due to how feminine she is. the second optiojn is that certain lobbyist groups have CENSORED the google filters to make goodra “gender-ambiguous” (i dont know how to spell the weird gender words. androganis?), but i realize that that is one of my more “out there” theories so i will let it pass. anyway, we can also notice in the “People also search for” tab some other interesting pokemon, including goodra’s Previous Evolutions, another fellow dragon pokemon Noivern, Hawlucha (? i dont get this one. maybe it is a competitive thing) and florges, another exclusively female pokemon. interesting!
Tumblr media
here is another screen shot, from the “Google Images” option which i will now begin to talk about. you can see right off the bat female” is the most searched word that is paired with goodra!! it is so obvious to everyone. for some reason “male” is the second most common one, which i believe is searched so often because people become confused and incredulous when a troll says that male goodra exists, so they go to google to find out if it is true, fortunaely, google image searching male goodra only brings up yet more images of demonstrably and visibly female goo dragons! take that! unfortunately, there are also some “Relics” of troll campaigns against previous female goodra advocates, which makes me sad. however, we must know our own history in order to move forward stronger than ever. anyway, the other commonly searched terms are the names of female characters and other feminine things, such as maids, or baby’s. no surprises there.
Tumblr media
let’s get into the images! here is a piece of official art. wow! i was sooo impressed!!the official pokemon artist created a masterpiece here. goodra’s femininity is so strong that even the most generic images of her jump right off of the page!! notice the large feminine hips and thighs, and the antennae, which are Stylized into that  most female of hair styles, “Twin-Tails,” which only girls and women can have. amazing! the ammount of care put into these was truly astounding, down to the cute little curls and kind, motherly smile upon her face.
Tumblr media
here we get into the “fan-artistry” territory. and each one of these is even more feminine than the official art! from the small girlish bow atop her brow in the first one to the exaggerated curves of the second one, each piece makes it more and more clear that no normal self-respecting, artist with even half of a brain could ever think of goodra as anything but female!! it’s just so obvious. everyone despises male goodra sommuch that they cant’ bring themselves to draw pictures of it. plus, since references of male goodra do not exist due to male goodra not existig in the Games, Art, or Anime, all graven images of ““““male”“““ goodra are INVALID becuase there is NO WAY that an arstist could even KNOW what a male goodra could look like because they ARENT REAL, IDIOTS!!! and not canon either. no one cares about them and if you showed a random person on the street an image of a so-called male goodra they would slap you on the face and throw it on the ground and spit on it until you couldnt tell what it is anymore. everyone normal hates male goodra soooooo much!!!!! its so obvious. also i dont know if you can tell because i Screen-Cropped the images kind of small but in the third pic goodra’s eyes are very feminine and they have eyelashes (female)
Tumblr media
last one isn’t too relevant, just something that gave me a little chuckle (: what a silly picture! she is so cute and enjoying herself
if you guys like this Special Feature i might do another ”GOO”gle segment in the future. also if you didn;t catch it, ““GOO”gle”is a pun that puts goo (from the goo in goodra) into google, which also has goo in it. just a little pun, for fun!! have a great day!

donna + their autism and how it affects the way they think and their interests i! like / reply when you read if you wna interact w donna or plan on it because its rlly important!
so this post is what im gna keep referring to in this canon because its very true for them.
they analyse and view things down-up as opposed to non-autistic ppls looking at things up-down.
this is what makes finding underlying patterns in art, ( esp music, ) makeup and terry pratchett lore their special interests.
to further expand, donna is attracted to indie-pop-electronicy sounds like purity ring and chvrches in music, because the rhythms and instrumentation are atmospheric-sounding and sound super intricate, even if they rlly arent. there are PATTERNS in the instrumentations, appealing sounds are layered on top of one another and then there are vocals on top of it. they can pick anything in it, like the bassline, the treble etc to focus on, or all of it and they love being able to do that. [ examples: 90s music ; kimbra, obedear ; purity ring, playing dead, chvrches. ]
alt-j has the same appeal, but a different sound– strange and elaborate. some favourites of theirs inc every other freckle, ( their Hands Down Gun To Their Head Favourite, ) fitzpleasure, and left hand free.
the same love of complexities is what drew them to lush products and makeup, too. lush has a product for just about everything– toothpaste, deodorant, every kind of bath product under the sun, and no two r the same. plus all of it is glittery and colourful, which is also something that attracts donna Immediately.
makeup appeals to them because it also requires detail. first you put on ya colour corrector, then you put concealer on top of that, and then foundation, and then undereye bake, etc etc. its a long process and its very involved – you gotta b paying attention when youre putting ya makeup on, or else your mascara is sloppy or you forgot setting spray. such an extensive ordeal usually wld make donna balk, but theres a reward– you look fantastic when you finish!! and one of their favourite sensories is to spread things on their face. ( which is also what draws them to face masks. like Proper Ones, not none of that ‘‘‘’’’’’’’’sheet mask’’’’’’’’’’’ bullshit. )
( watching donna put their makeup on is an Experience. theyll never let you do it but. you can catch a peek if you hang round them long enough. )
terry pratchett appeals to their down-up thought process. his discworld is SO detailed, but unlike Shit Fuck Jolkien Rolkien Rolkien R Tolkien, he didnt focus ENTIRELY on the setting and eschew good characters for worldbuilding. his characters are just as detailed. he personified death and makes him snappy and irreverent, but wise and oddly, awkwardly caring. sam vimes, a policeman, is cantankerous and grouchy, every inch a former lawman ; but also broken and utterly human. tiffany aching doesnt wna b a princess because she doesnt fit the physical description so she becomes a witch. everything was detailed to the teeth and there was humourous, engrossing, magical storytelling on top of it all.
i didnt list this one in the larger bullet point, but intricate details r part of what drew donna to making jewellery, too, other than needing to drown themself in shiny objects all the time. when they were younger and trying to figure out what they liked, they knew they wanted to be an artist. but every other form of visual art wasnt right. sculpting made their hands dirty and so did painting. drawing was too broad, not enough detail. but in jewellery making!!!! there are sparkly beads and wire and fifty million options to choose from for everything!!!! you can be as simple or detailed as you want!!!!! you can make a pair of earrings dripping with beads and fuckoff curlicue wire or you can make something way simpler!!!!! there are endless possibilities in jewellery, esp now that they work almost exclusively w metal and beads. no two r the same, and theres also choice in that statement in making jewelry. no two pieces of jewelry you make r the same unless you want them to look that way.
thats also why donna likes making mosaics: shiny, elaborate, a task of putting little pieces together and getting something gorgeous out of it when youre finished w it.
theyve never put together a puzzle before, or at least theyve not done it in awhile, but theyd love it if they did it. :,)
donna will most likely pick up on single esoteric details about your character when they interact w them and remember them forever. for example, for a meme i sent kat im too lazy to find but will link when less lazy, they asked alana what lipstick colours she likes, because she most often wears red, and so does donna. well burgundy, in their case. anyway what im getting at is, they noticed her lip colour and the fact that she wears it often and its similarity in shade and consistency to their own, so they gathered she has an interest in makeup similar to theirs.
a larger reason, and i think the real reason why donnas so tired all the time and sleeps so much, aside from fuckening enjoying it, is because theyre constantly noticing and processing underlying patterns even if they dont want to, and taking in all that info is TIRING if you never stop doing it.
they will tire out TENFOLD if theyre in a social situation they arent comfortable w.
whilst it probably seems paradoxical, theyre actually all right in situations like parties or at nightclubs or where the endgoal is to meet ppl and have fun. because those r mindless activities, they can lose themself in dancing or making out w someone or focusing on looking hot and unapproachable in a corner or against a wall to risk getting overstimulated. meltdowns rlly ruin the whole Smouldering Temptress feel they have goin all the time :-/
thats it for now! ill probably reblog this and add more l8r!

i've been wanting to play the pokemon games but there are so many and i don't know where to start. do i have to start from the first ones? if not, then where should i start/what order should i play them in?
you don’t have to start with the first games. each game is its own self-contained story set in the same universe, so you dont need the context of the previous games and the tutorials in the beginning always go by the assumption you’ve never played a pokemon game before. there are typically some references to previous games made by nameless npcs, but it’s never anything major and if you really wanted to understand them i think it would just take a quick google search to get the full context, you wouldn’t have to go back and play an entire game or anything.
there’s not really a suggested order to play them in, but i definitely don’t mind making recommendations. ive played through all these games several times, and with the exception of firered/leafgreen, diamond/pearl/platinum, and heartgold/soulsilver i’ve played through them within the past 2 years. so my memory is relatively fresh.
first of all, i’m not going to recommend you anything that’s had a remake. i love the classic games and i feel like they were a wonderful starting point for a fantastic series, but theyre not a great starting point. i play them for the nostalgia because i grew up playing pokemon since the first generation, my wife didn’t really play pokemon until the fourth generation and only enjoys the classic games because she already loves pokemon. compared to newer games, theyre just not that fun if you don’t already have a lot of nostalgia/love of pokemon in general.
also a quick note about which versions you should pick--it honestly doesn’t matter. they’re the same game, but there’s a small handful of pokemon that’ll appear in one version and not the other. sometimes i choose by which pokemon on the box art i like best and sometimes i choose by going to serebii and looking at the version exclusives list. its really up to you and your preferences, and it doesn’t matter that much either way
Sun and Moon/Ultra Sun and Ultra Moonthese are definitely the ones i’d suggest starting with, they’re the most beginner-friendly by far. there’s a new feature that tells you if your opponent is weak or resistant to your moves if it’s a pokemon you’ve fought before, which is great because now you don’t have to mentally keep track of the type matchup chart and the individual types of 800+ pokemon! your pokedex also shows you if a pokemon is part of a pair or has evolutions, so you won’t make mistakes i made when i was a kid where i assumed some of my pokemon didn’t have evolutions and didn’t train them and missed out on some cool pokemon as a result. story-wise, they’re my favorite so far and have done the best job of fleshing out and developing their characters.
as for whether you should play sun/moon or ultra sun/ultra moon, i’m not sure. the ultra versions have a few new pokemon, new areas, new moves, and an “enhanced” story, which is basically the same as the old story but deeper this time (and while i haven’t finished it, i’m enjoying it a lot). but the “new” things aren’t that many and i think whats giving me so much appreciation of the ultra story is the fact that ive already played through sun/moon, but that might just be me. it’s probably better to go with the ultra version because it has much more content for about the same price, but original sun/moon are still good choices if you have your heart set on those.
Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphiretheyre remakes of the third generation games ruby/sapphire and imo they lived up to the hype. ruby/sapphire were fan favorites and so are or/as. they aren’t really difficult because the games that came out right before this introduced an item that lets your entire party gain exp from a battle even if they didn’t participate, and while or/as are more balanced for this item than the game that introduced it, they still arent quite all the way there. personally i don’t mind it, i think these games are enjoyable regardless of if they’re challenging or not, but you’re free to turn the item on/off as you want to make it as easy or as difficult as you want.
X/Yhoo boy. i actually don’t like x/y. they had bad pacing, the story barely held itself together, and this is the game where the exp share was introduced and if you never turn it off, your pokemon get way overlevel and you can effortlessly breeze through the game. but they’re pretty, and i think the fact that theyre ridiculously easy might make them more enjoyable for new players because it’s the perfect chance to just build a team of pokemon you like instead of worrying about strength or team composition. plus, this is the first game to have character customization and you get enough money through the course of the game that buying all the clothes is easy.
Black/White and Black 2/White 2black and white are by far my favorite pokemon games, and black 2 and white 2 are the only direct sequels to a previous game so you should probably wait until after playing b/w to worry about b2/w2. i really enjoyed the story and this was the first time i actually got heavily invested in the characters because until this point, most characters in pokemon games felt pretty flat and one-dimensional. the one complaint i have is how exp scales based on your level. the concept itself is fine, but it feels like the scaling is extreme and there’s a lot of exp you start to lose just by going up a single level, which makes grinding a massive pain. but grinding isnt really required, so it’s nothing to worry about unless you’re determined to be overlevel.
HeartGold/SoulSilverremakes of the second generation games gold/silver and another huge favorite of mine, but arguably also a direct sequel to red/blue. they don’t lean heavily on red/blue but when they were initially designed they were called pokemon 2 and were intended to be the last games, so unlike other games it begins with the assumption you’ve already played the previous game. but the tutorials are still available and neither gold/silver nor red/blue are very story-heavy in the first place, because this is when the series was still finding its footing. i think theyre perfectly fine to play through with no context, but i can understand if you’d prefer to skip them for now. i very much enjoyed having my pokemon walk around with me all the time, the environments are beautiful, and hg/ss has the most useful use of the DS’s bottom screen.
Diamond/Pearl/Platinumok i know i listed diamond/pearl but that’s just because they deserve a mention. platinum is the enhanced version, and unless you see a pokemon thats exclusive to diamond/pearl and you REALLY want it, you should play platinum. that being said, i don’t actually like these games that much. they made improvements to the gameplay that have stayed through the current generations and provided deep lore about the pokemon universe and had a killer ost and a fun underground mining mini game, but outside of those the game always felt really lackluster to me and even as a kid i had a hard time getting invested in it. i think it was level design and difficulty curve that put me off so much but since i havent played them in so long i can’t say that for sure. overall, i’d say they’re worth playing at least for the lore because it’s very good and very important, but probably only if you already like pokemon. theyre not great first games.
FireRed/LeafGreeni’m only listing these because they’re currently the most updated way to play the first generation (red/blue) but they’re older than anything else on this list. stat calculations are different. movesets are different. and both of those are a bad different, not good or even neutral. they did a good job of providing extra tutorials, but overall theyre just completely outdated and suffering from red/blue’s bad layout and level design. i’m hoping these are the next games we get remakes of (remake of a remake sounds ridiculous, but these games are seriously getting close to 15 years old) but until then i’d really only suggest playing them if you already love pokemon and just want to see older games in the series.
